National Taichung Theater
Designed by architect Toyo Ito, the National Taichung Theater is built almost entirely from curved, cave-like concrete forms with barely a straight wall in the building — a striking piece of architecture whether or not you catch a performance inside. The surrounding plaza and ground-floor spaces are open to walk through even without tickets to a show.
Night markets & food
Fengjia Night Market is Taichung's largest and most famous, a sprawling grid of stalls near Feng Chia University with a strong reputation even by Taiwan's high night-market standards. Beyond the markets, Taichung's broader food scene tends to be more relaxed and less tourist-priced than central Taipei, with a strong café culture in addition to street food.
If you're doing Taichung as a single day trip, prioritize either the theater-and-city-center side or Fengjia Night Market and the areas near it — they're not close together, and trying to cram both into a tight day-trip schedule leaves too little time for either.
Other stops worth a look
Rainbow Village, a cluster of houses covered in colorful folk-art paintings by a single elderly resident who saved them from demolition, has become an unlikely photo-friendly attraction. Miyahara, a former ophthalmology clinic converted into an elaborately decorated ice cream and gift shop, is a smaller, easier stop if your day is tight.
