Choose the base that makes the awkward parts of your trip easier
Taipei does not have one universally "best" hotel district. The useful question is what you want to minimise. If you dislike changing trains with luggage, staying around Taipei Main Station is hard to beat. If you want food, shopping and people around you after dinner, Ximending makes more sense. If your trip is built around Taipei 101, shopping and polished nightlife, Xinyi puts that world outside the lobby.
For most visitors, being within a comfortable walk of an MRT station matters more than shaving a few kilometres off the distance to one attraction. Taipei's rail network lets you build a good trip from several districts, while a poorly located room can add an annoying walk at the beginning and end of every day.
Ximending & Wanhua — lively, central and budget-friendly
Ximending works particularly well for first-time visitors who want a lot happening close to the hotel. The pedestrian district, the Red House area and the older streets of Wanhua give you late food, shopping and people-watching without needing to plan an evening excursion. Ximen Station also gives the area straightforward MRT access.
The trade-off is atmosphere after dark: the central pedestrian streets can stay busy and bright. Light sleepers should look one or two streets back from the busiest blocks and read recent room-specific noise comments. Taipei Main Station & Zhongshan — strongest for transport logistics
Choose the Main Station area when rail connections are a big part of the itinerary. Taipei Main Station links urban MRT services with Taiwan Railways and Taiwan High Speed Rail, while the Airport MRT's A1 Taipei Main Station is connected into the broader station district. That makes this base especially useful for travellers arriving with luggage, taking intercity day trips or leaving early.
The immediate station blocks feel more functional than romantic, and the underground passages can be confusing on a first visit. The upside is convenience and a wide accommodation spread. Xinyi District — modern Taipei, shopping and skyline nights
Xinyi is the easiest choice when the modern skyline is part of the holiday. Taipei 101, large shopping complexes, restaurants and evening venues cluster here, and the district is served by both the Red and Blue MRT corridors depending on which side you stay on. The official Taipei Metro station for Taipei 101/World Trade Center sits directly on the Red Line.
You usually choose Xinyi for the neighbourhood itself rather than because it is the perfect launch point for every day trip. It is particularly good for business travellers, short luxury breaks and anyone who wants a polished late-evening scene without crossing town. Da'an — calmer streets without giving up central access
Da'an is my pick for travellers who want central Taipei to feel a little less relentless. Around Da'an Forest Park and the residential streets beyond it, you get green space, cafés and restaurants while remaining on useful MRT corridors. It suits longer stays, repeat visitors and couples who would rather come home to a quieter street than a major entertainment district.
Da'an is broad, so check the exact pin rather than booking on the district name alone. A room near an MRT station can be extremely convenient; a property on the far edge of the district may involve more walking than the listing headline suggests.
Beitou — make the hot springs part of the stay
Beitou is not the default base for a first, sightseeing-heavy Taipei trip, but it can be the right choice when soaking is one of the reasons you came. Staying here turns a hot-spring visit from a rushed half-day outing into part of your morning or evening routine.
The cost is central-city convenience. You will spend more time riding into the main sightseeing districts, so I would choose Beitou for a dedicated retreat, a split stay, or a slower itinerary rather than simply because you found an attractive room. On a map, 500 metres does not look like much. With luggage, summer humidity, rain, stairs and a long day behind you, it absolutely can. Check the actual walking route to the station entrance — not just the straight-line distance — before you book.
Let airport transfers and day trips break the tie
If two neighbourhoods appeal equally, look at the hardest travel day in your itinerary. An Airport MRT connection or several High Speed Rail journeys pushes the decision toward Taipei Main Station. Multiple late nights in Ximending or Xinyi pushes the decision toward staying there rather than commuting home after every evening. A nature-and-hot-spring break can justify Beitou even if central travel takes longer.
This is also why I rarely recommend switching hotels repeatedly inside Taipei. Unless a split stay gives you a genuinely different experience — for example, central Taipei plus a Beitou hot-spring night — the packing usually costs more time than the MRT ride you were trying to avoid.
