Taipei Main Station is the meeting point of the MRT Red and Blue lines, the mainline rail network, the High Speed Rail to the rest of Taiwan, and the Airport MRT — no other single point in the city gets you everywhere else faster. If your trip involves day trips by train, an early airport departure, or you simply don't want to think hard about logistics, this is the safest default choice.
What it's actually like to stay here
The immediate station area is dominated by transit infrastructure, business hotels, and underground shopping malls rather than the atmospheric old-street charm of somewhere like Ximending or Dihua Street — both of which are, conveniently, an easy walk away if you want that in the evenings. During the day the area is extremely busy with commuters; at night it quiets down considerably faster than nightlife-focused districts like Xinyi or Ximending, which suits travelers who want easy access without the noise.
The station itself is enormous and can be legitimately disorienting the first time, with multiple underground levels connecting to different transit lines and shopping areas. Screenshot or note your hotel's nearest exit number in advance — it saves real time versus figuring it out on arrival with luggage.
