Maokong Gondola: Taipei's Cable Car to Tea Country

A 4km cable car ride lifts you out of the city and into Maokong, a hillside tea-growing region on Taipei's southern edge. It's one of the best-value experiences in the city: a genuine change of scenery, a great view back over Taipei, and a relaxed afternoon among family-run tea houses at the other end.

The ride

The gondola departs from a station next to Taipei Zoo and climbs steadily over forested hillside for around 30 minutes end to end, with an optional stop at Zhinan Temple along the way. Standard cabins are free to board in sequence; if you want one of the glass-bottom "Crystal Cabins," you'll queue in a separate line — worth it if you're not uneasy with heights, since the floor view over the treetops (and, near the top, the tea terraces) is the whole appeal.

Local tip

Weekday mornings are dramatically quieter than weekend afternoons, when queues for the Crystal Cabins can run well over an hour. If you only have a weekend to visit, go as close to opening time as you can.

What to do at the top

Maokong has been a tea-growing area since the 19th century, known particularly for Tieguanyin and baozhong varieties. Most visitors spend their time hopping between the hillside tea houses, many of which are family-run and let you order a full gongfu tea set (kettle, small cups, timer) for surprisingly little money, with a view over the Taipei basin included. A short walking trail network also connects several of the tea gardens if you'd rather explore on foot than stay seated.
