Entry requirements, fees and regulations can change with little notice. Treat everything below as a starting point, and confirm current details with an official source — Taiwan's Bureau of Consular Affairs, or your own country's foreign travel advisory service — close to your departure date.
Entry & visa requirements
Taiwan has visa-exemption arrangements with a substantial number of countries, typically allowing stays of a set number of days for tourism without a visa. Exact eligibility, permitted stay length, and required documents (such as onward travel proof) vary by nationality and do change over time. Check the Bureau of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Taiwan) website directly for the current rules that apply to your passport before booking.
Emergency numbers
| Police | 110 |
|---|---|
| Fire & ambulance | 119 |
| Tourist information hotline | A dedicated 24-hour multilingual tourist information line operates in Taiwan for travel-related questions and assistance — ask your hotel for the current number, as these can change. |
Money & payments
Taiwan's currency is the New Taiwan Dollar (TWD/NT$). Cash is still widely used, especially at night markets and smaller shops, though card and mobile payment acceptance has been expanding steadily in recent years. Carrying some cash is still a sensible default, particularly for the food-stall and market experiences that are a big part of visiting Taipei — see our night markets guide.
Connectivity
Airport arrivals halls typically offer SIM card and eSIM purchase counters, and pocket WiFi rental is also widely available. Free public WiFi exists in many MRT stations and public areas, though a local SIM or eSIM is generally more reliable for a full day of navigation and translation apps.
Weather-related disruption
