Ximending & Wanhua — best for first-timers on a budget
Central, walkable, packed with budget and mid-range hotels and hostels, and close to both Longshan Temple and Taipei Main Station. The trade-off is noise — this is a nightlife-and-shopping district, so pick a hotel set back from the busiest pedestrian streets if you're a light sleeper. Zhongshan & Taipei Main Station area — best all-round base
The most centrally connected area in the city, with direct MRT and rail links to the airport, high-speed rail, and most of the neighborhoods on this list. Xinyi District — best for shopping, nightlife & skyline views

Da'an — best for a quieter, local-feeling stay
A largely residential, leafy district around Da'an Forest Park, popular with longer-term visitors and those who want a calmer base with excellent independent cafés and restaurants, while staying well within MRT reach of everything else.
Beitou — best for a hot-spring-focused stay
Further from downtown, but directly on the Red Line, Beitou lets you soak in a private in-room onsen at the end of each sightseeing day. Whichever area you choose, check the walking distance to the nearest MRT station before booking — even 400–500 extra metres makes a noticeable difference after a long day of sightseeing in summer humidity.
